We Are An International Tribal Community!

ATAYAL, Inc. is a non-profit organization headquartered in the Orlando, Florida area with members and volunteers around the world.

Mission Statement

ATAYAL, Inc. is committed to preserving the indigenous culture of Taiwan through international education and programs in the USA and abroad which highlight the people's contributions to society. ATAYAL, Inc. will also implement programs to empower the tribal members to create their own opportunities for success in their modern and competitive society. We are the worldwide voice of the indigenous tribes of Taiwan.

Case Statement

ATAYAL, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to providing a "voice" for the indigenous tribes of Taiwan in the United States through the use of media, events and community partnerships. These tools, which include a web site, documentary projects, and other multimedia projects focused on the indigenous culture of Taiwan, are needed to ensure preservation of the arts and culture of these tribes at a time when the fate of the indigenous tribes of Taiwan is uncertain.

Indigenous cultures have notoriously been assimilated and marginalized by Han Chinese culture. When the Chinese authorities took over Taiwan in 1947, much of the indigenous culture of the island had been erased. There has been a shift in government policy in Taiwan towards indigenous people since the 1990's, and the culture has seen a significant revitalization. With the uncertain political situation between China and Taiwan, the survival of Taiwan's indigenous people as we know them is precarious, which brings serious and substantial concerns about the future of the arts and culture.

The indigenous tribes of Taiwan have existed for 5,000 years and today are comprised of approximately 367,000 people and consist of the Amis tribe (population 130,000); the Atayal tribe (population 90,000); the Bunun tribe (population 37,000); the Paiwan tribe (population 70,000); the Puyuma tribe (population 10,000); the Rukai tribe (population 12,000); the Saisiyat tribe (population 4,000); the Thao tribe (population 3,000); the Tsou tribe (population 7,500) and the Yami tribe (population 4,000). ATAYAL is committed to preserving the arts and culture of indigenous tribes of Taiwan and needs community support to make its vision a reality. ATAYAL was formed in early 2001 by Atayal tribal descendent Tony Coolidge, who was driven by personal and cultural concerns to preserve the history, arts and culture of the indigenous tribes of Taiwan.

There are at least 5,000 indigenous groups made up of 300 million people that live in more than 70 countries on five continents. They represent approximately 4% of the world's population. With so many indigenous cultures in so many countries that have limited resources and unstable political situations, many indigenous cultures, especially those in Taiwan, may soon be lost forever. Americans are blessed with more resources than people of any other country. It is our privilege as Americans to share our blessings with others in the world who do not have the same opportunities. The ATAYAL organization will make a difference for these groups by providing opportunities for expression and prosperity, and ultimately... survival.
