THE DOCUMENTARIES

ATAYAL is committed to using the media to educate the international community about Taiwan's indigenous culture.

TV Documentary - Atayal (Taroko) Trail - (Completed) - The documentary film, "Voices In The Clouds" is a project in development since 1997. The idea for the film came from the article, Village In The Clouds, which was written for ORIENT Magazine in 1996. In the film, the audience will follow the personal story of a Taiwanese-American who is transformed by a life-altering experience after the death of his mother. The story follows his journey of transformation and introduces an amazing group of people he befriends along the way.

The main character, Tony Coolidge, discovers the indigenous culture and peoples of Taiwan, and the audience will share this discovery with him in a very personal and intimate way. There, he searches for his roots and finds completion with his "mother's spirit" and his past. The voices of the colorful indigenous people, once oppressed and silenced, now sing high above the clouds among the villages of his lost homeland. He is so deeply moved that he takes on his ultimate mission in life to ensure the voices of his people are heard throughout the world, with the hope that the voices will draw others to discover and get complete with their own spirits of the past. Documentary Feature Film - Voices In The Clouds - (1997-Fall 2005) - This 2 hour feature documentary reveals the story of how the indigenous tribes of Taiwan captured the heart and soul of an American who discovered his indigenous Taiwanese heritage after his mother's death. His journey of self-discovery and transformation involved interactions with his family, relatives and friends, and spans two countries and three cultures. While the film revolves around a triangle of relationships that brings together generations of cultural conflicts, it illustrates the victories that are possible over cultural differences. One of the cultures featured is the indigenous culture of Taiwan, so this story will be an opportunity to introduce this tribal culture to an American audience. ATAYAL has partnered with Inquisitive Productions of New York City to create this work. Click here for details.
