From left to right: An Atayal woman near Hualien with a photograph of her mother.
After we left Taroko National Park, Eric Huang took a detour that he thought we would enjoy. We went into a small Atayal village just outside of Hualien, got out and started walking. Eric wasn't shy and approached anyone we happened to meet and asked if we could join them.
In this village, we came upon an Atayal woman who was very open and friendly. She invited us to her home and was happy to share with us. She was joined by her two granddaughters and we had an exchange of cultures. In the photo above, she is showing a photo of her deceased mother, who had an Atayal facial tattoo. She also showed the colorful textiles that her mother wove. She took us for a walk around the village before we bid her a fond farewell.
