When visiting the Atayal Facial Tattoo Studio in Hualien, Taiwan, I noticed some of the Atayal artifacts in the room. Some that I found interesting were the traditional tools used by the Atayal tribes to apply tattoos on the face. They looked very crude, using pieces of iron and wood, as well as looking quite painful. I could imagine what the young Atayal men and women endured to get their facial markings.
