An Atayal mother and daughter near Hualien.

We were leaving the small Atayal village just outside Hualien, when something caught my eye. I spotted a large workshop with interesting indigenous carvings. We stopped in for a visit to admire the artwork and meet the artist. The artist wasn't in, but we were greeted by his wife who showed us around. We were soon joined by her mother. They were of Atayal descent. They were kind enough to share with us some of the traditional farming and gathering culture while we looked on with curiosity.
