From left to right: Tony Coolidge and Yulaw Nokan
In Wulai, we stopped by my cousin Mu-Chi's house to pay respects to his son who passed away last year. It was a tragic loss for his family, and unfortunately, there have been quite a few tragic losses among my relatives. After learning of our mission and our documentary film projects, Mu-Chi asked me if I have ever met my cousin, Yulaw. I said "no" and he drove me up to his place.
Apparently, Yulaw Nokan is a well-known Atayal musician who recently gained fame as an actor in the film, "Somewhere Over The Dreamland." This film won an award at the Venice Film Festival in Italy. He also produced the award-winning music for the film.
We enjoyed spending time in his restaurant, where we had discussions. He performed his music to entertain us before we left. We plan to study his film for research purposes and to help promote it.
